• The following lesson designs reflect stages of beginning reading involving emergent literacy, fluency, and reading to learn. They relate to the ALCOS English standards (21), (22), and (23) which state, "Demonstrating an understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes) (21),"  "Knowing and applying grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words (22)," "Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding (23)."
