"A person's a person, no matter how small."
- Dr. Seuss
As a teacher, I believe that every child is capable of learning in their own, individual, creative way. It should be the teachers priority not only to accomplish the goals of the curriculum as it relates to state standards, but give students the opportunity to learn through discovery within the classroom setting. I provide my students with an environment full of open-ended tasks fostering authentic learning. In this environment, students can easily be assessed formatively through their understanding of the activity at hand as well as sumatively assessed later through authentic, interactive tasks.
Giving students opportunities to learn through their own interests, exploration, and research teaches them to be autonomous learners instead of looking to others for instruction. Creating a sense of community in the classroom is also crucial because although students should autonomous, they need to be able to work with others; learning to understand the feelings of others and be able to collaborate as a learning community when solving problems instead of asking the teacher first.
